Small Assisted Living Home vs. Large Community: Which Is Right for Your Parent?
When most families start looking at assisted living, they picture a big building with a dining hall, a lobby and a full activity calendar. Those communities are a great fit for some people. But there's another option many families don't hear about until later in their search: a small, residential assisted living home. Here's an honest look at how the two compare, so you can decide what fits your parent.
The numbers behind small homes
According to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, communities with 4 to 25 beds make up about 63% of assisted living and residential care communities in the U.S., yet they house only about 17% of residents. Most residents (68%) live in communities with more than 50 beds. (CDC NCHS Data Brief 222)
The people living in small homes also tend to need more hands-on help. In 2020, 51% of residents in 4 to 25 bed communities had dementia, compared with 39% in communities with more than 50 beds, and 79% needed help with bathing, compared with 60%. (CDC NCHS Data Brief 454)
How they compare
Size and familiarity
In a small home, your parent lives with a handful of neighbors and sees the same faces every day. Caregivers learn how they take their coffee, when they like to rest and what helps on a hard day. A large community offers more social variety, but also more new faces, more shift changes and more hallways to navigate.
Staffing
Staffing in larger communities varies a lot and often changes between day and night shifts, so always ask for specifics. At Woodhaven, our plan is 1 caregiver for every 8 residents, with staff on site 24/7.
Daily routine
In a small home, the day can bend around the resident: meals come from a home kitchen and there's room for a slow morning or an afternoon on the porch. Larger communities usually run on set dining times and a structured activity calendar, which is great for people who love having lots of programs to choose from.
Amenities
This is where large communities shine. Many offer fitness rooms, salons, bistros, transportation and several activity spaces. A small home offers a real house, a yard and home-style activities, but fewer on-site extras.
Cost
Pricing works differently from place to place. Many larger communities charge a base rent plus care level fees and add-ons, so the final monthly number can climb as needs change. Small homes often bundle more into one monthly rate. At Woodhaven, private rooms start at $8,900 per month. See our pricing and our guide to paying for care.
Care needs and memory support
A quiet setting with consistent caregivers can be a good fit for early memory changes. Woodhaven offers early memory support with two Certified Dementia Practitioners on staff. We are not a secured memory care setting, so a parent who wanders or needs a locked unit may be better served by a dedicated memory care community.
Who tends to thrive in a small home
People who feel overwhelmed in big, busy spaces
People with early memory changes who do better with routine and familiar faces
Anyone who needs hands-on help with bathing, dressing or medications
People who prefer quiet, home-cooked meals and close relationships with caregivers
Families who want to know every caregiver by name
When a larger community may be a better fit
Your parent wants lots of clubs, classes and outings
Amenities like a gym, pool or on-site salon matter a lot
Your parent needs a secured memory care unit
Your parent wants apartment-style independence with their own kitchen
There's no wrong answer here. The right choice is the one that fits your parent's personality, care needs and budget.
